Survivor's Planning Guide: Timeline

Do Immediately or As Soon As Possible

  1. Call Pastor/family member/personal friend
  2. Call Funeral Home
  3. Call friends and relatives
  4. Get all "important documents" together
  5. Get list of "important numbers"
  6. Arrange for funeral and burial (Honors?)

First Month

Contact Social Security regarding notification; benefits

Open checking account in your own name

Contact VA to check on benefits

Contact insurers about settlements

Send medical claims to insurers

See accountant regarding taxes; transferring assets

Establish a budget

Change credit cards to your name
