Downloading Files
Downloading files from the Internet is fine, as long as you know what you're getting. If it's not the sound or graphic file you expect, or if the file contains an unexpected payload, you could be in for trouble. If you want to stop a download, click the 'Stop' button on your browser immediately.
Keep Antivirus Software Current
Antivirus software is a powerful tool in helping to keep your computer safe. By saving a file you wish to download to your local machine prior to activating it, the antivirus software can scan the file you download to determine whether it contains known viruses or other dangerous intruders.
Some examples of malicious programs include, but are not limited to:
- Worms - which can "burrow" into your computer and duplicate themselves so often that they cause your computer to crash
- Trojan horses - which are seemingly useful programs (like games or utilities) that do something destructive to your computer when activated.
- Most files you can download do not contain malicious code. However, you do need to keep in mind that it takes only one infected file to caus real problems. By keeping your antivirus software up to date, you greatly increase your chances of keeping your computer safe from harm.
Be Wary of "Shared" Download Services
Peer-to-peer services that enable individuals around the world to swap music and other files (i.e. Napster) are increasingly popular. These services enable you to search for files you don't have, and download them from another user's computer -- and vice versa. If you are using peer-to-peer technologies you still need to protect yourself with virus protection software and personal firewalls. In addition, you need to use whatever security features the sharing program provides to ensure that you are sharing only those files that you want made available to anyone on the Internet.
