County Residents Eligible for Free Smoking Cessation Program
Residents seek resources to quit smoking as cities enact bans
November 20, 2014 (Tarrant County, TX) – With the news that another Tarrant County city has banned smoking in restaurants, Tarrant County Public Health (TCPH) is offering county residents a free support program to quit smoking. Classes are available online or in person.
The Bedford City Council recently approved an ordinance banning smoking in restaurants effective in January. The ordinance also prohibits smoking within 10 feet of the restaurant’s primary entrance or an open window.
“We applaud efforts to end smoking in our community and are here to support every resident who is ready to quit,” said TCPH Health Director Vinny Taneja. “Our Freedom from Smoking program has a 30-year record of success, and it’s completely free to participants. You have the flexibility of attending a class and getting in-person support or doing it all online. Smokers have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”
Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. More than half of all current smokers in Tarrant County tried to quit in the past year but failed.
The four-week Freedom from Smoking program addresses the key issues of managing stress, nicotine withdrawal, weight control, and long-term strategies for maintaining a smoke-free lifestyle.
Support groups are available to help residents accomplish their goals and participants can meet with counselors in person or by phone.
The Freedom from Smoking program is offered in both English and Spanish.
For more information, contact TCPH at firstname.lastname@example.org or 817-321-4976.
Bedford becomes the eighth city in Tarrant County to approve a law banning smoking in local restaurants. The city joins Arlington, Benbrook, Flower Mound, Fort Worth, Grand Prairie, Southlake and White Settlement.
