    Vinny Taneja getting flu shot

Many of you may not know Tarrant County Public Health maintains year-round influenza surveillance. But with flu season upon us, these next few months are the ones to watch. Most people don’t realize the influenza virus is a living organism that continually adapts to its environment, which makes it difficult to develop a vaccine that completely eradicates it. New vaccines to fight flu are developed every year using data from what is known about the previous year’s strain. But that process takes time, which allows the virus to evolve.

Nevertheless, because flu can kill, Public Health will continue to warn everyone to guard themselves from it. We provide some protection with the flu vaccine, as well as other common sense tips – like covering your coughs and sneezes, staying home if you’re sick and staying away from others who are sick.

After you get the shot, it takes about two weeks for your body to develop sufficient antibodies that help ward off the flu. So the sooner you get a flu shot, the quicker your protection can happen.

Fighting the flu is an ongoing battle. Arm yourself with a flu shot as soon as you can.

Here's to your continued good health!
