    Zika mosquito

I am sure by now most of you have heard about the Zika Virus.

This is a mosquito-borne illness that is carried by Aedes mosquitoes, which unfortunately, are common to the North Texas area.

The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or red eyes. Other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, pain behind the eyes and vomiting. The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting for several days to a week. Zika virus symptoms are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya, diseases caused by other viruses spread by the same type of mosquitoes. The virus poses the greatest threat to unborn children of pregnant mothers. There is no vaccine for Zika virus at this time. The best thing the public can do, wherever possible, is to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes and to reduce the sources of potential mosquito breeding.

Though there are no cases of Zika in the county just yet, Zika virus is an emerging health issue that Tarrant County Public Health (TCPH) and  many of our local partner agencies are working to address and prepare for. One of the things we’ve done has been to create a web page about Zika, with information for the public as well as for local healthcare providers.

TCPH has also put together a video to educate people about eliminating mosquito breeding sites. It is also posted on our social media, Facebook, Twitter etc.

We ask you to view this video and share it on your own personal social media channels so more people will know what they can do to protect themselves from such diseases.

This is our Zika web page.

This is our Mosquito Elimination YouTube video.

Get educated about Zika.  It’s your best weapon against fear of the unknown!
