Springtime ushers in the best and the worst of weather conditions in Texas. Along with the days of idyllic temperatures, Tarrant County also gets brief periods of hair-raising storm systems that can bring flooding, hail, lightning, tornadoes or all the above at the same time.
Tarrant County Emergency Management officials recommend that all families have an emergency supply kit in case of any disaster.
This weekend will be the perfect time to stock up on supplies you will need if disaster strikes. That’s because the Texas legislature created a sales tax holiday to help you do just that. From 12:01 a.m. Saturday, April 22, until midnight Monday, April 24, Texans can purchase, tax free, batteries, first aid kits, axes, hatchets, cell phone chargers, ice chests, self-powered radios and flashlights, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, non-electric can openers, tarps and more — as long as each item costs less than $75. Portable generators that cost less than $3,000 can also be purchased as well as hurricane shutters and emergency ladders that cost less than $300.
An Emergency Supply Kit Checklist is available at the www.KnoWhat2Do.com website – a one-stop online disaster preparedness program that helps people put together a personal severe weather response plan.
A complete list of the items eligible for tax-free purchase is located on the Texas Comptroller’s website at https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/publications/98-1017.php.
(The Tarrant County Emergency Management Office has collected a sample of eligible items on the 4th floor of the Tarrant County Administration Building, 100 E. Weatherford St., in downtown Fort Worth. A representative from the office will be available to discuss emergency supply kits and the KnoWhat2do program.)
