The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an independent federal regulatory agency created by Congress in 1972 to protect the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with various consumer products, collects product information from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office in an ongoing effort to identify and recall defective products. Applicable deaths falling under the jurisdiction of the medical examiner's district are evaluated according to CPSC guidelines as set forth under the Medical Examiner's and Coroner's Alert Project (MECAP). During an in-depth investigation into the cause and manner of death, information about possible mechanisms of injury is assessed for validity. When a death is attributable to a consumer product, relevant information is compiled and forwarded to the CPSC. Specific information about these records, presented as summaries indexed by consumer product, can be obtained through the Injury/Potential Injury Incident File (IPII) maintained by the CPSC. Information presented by the medical examiner's office can lead to the CPSC's negotiation of voluntary industry standards, enforced mandatory standards, product recall and repair, research on potential product hazards, and consumer education initiatives.
