Child Fatality Review

Child Fatality Review Team

In 1995, the Texas legislature amended Chapter 264 of the Family Code with the Child Fatality Review Team and Investigation statute. It created the state Child Fatality Review Team committee, authorized local teams, established procedures for the operation of local teams and statewide analysis of information regarding child deaths, and charged the State Committee to make recommendations to reduce the number of preventable child deaths.

By the end of 1996, the Tarrant County Child Fatality Review Team had grown to a standing membership of 21 members. The membership includes representation from all three District Attorney’s Office, the major police departments in each of the counties represented, Child Protective Services, Cook Children’s Medical Center, MedStar Ambulance, North Texas SIDS Alliance, Alliance for Children, and the Fort Worth/Tarrant County Health Department. Also, during 1996, representatives from Wise County requested to be included into the review process. This request was due to children dying in a Tarrant County medical facility who were Wise County residence’s. This inclusion into the Team has resulted in the better flow of information not only for the review, but for the investigative agencies in Wise County.
