Evidence: Chain of Custody

{Photo collage showing evidence}

Evidentiary items submitted to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Laboratories range from toxicology samples acquired during an autopsy to items confiscated by Law Enforcement agencies.  Chain of Custody forms must be maintained for each item of evidence submitted for analysis.  A Chain of Custody form records the actual location of any piece of evidence in a case at any point in time and is also considered as valuable evidence.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office has a team of evidence specialists that receive evidence from outside agencies, the morgue and the forensic laboratories. Once the analysis of an item is complete it is resealed with evidence tape and returned to the evidence specialists.  They may place the object in temporary storage until it is returned to the submitting agency.
