The mission of the Tarrant County Juvenile Drug Court is to help at-risk youth and their families become successful in leading drug-free, law-abiding, productive lives. The program accepts as a premise that juveniles involved in drug use often have other issues in their lives leading to the use of drugs. The Drug Court Program seeks to address both the issues that lead to drug use and the drug use itself. Based on the national model for similar programs, Juvenile Drug Court targets juvenile offenders referred for substance abuse offenses. The project offers eligible youth a voluntary opportunity to receive substance abuse treatment as an alternative to being placed on formal probation for the law violation. Assessment information about the youth’s substance abuse and treatment needs is provided to the judge, who defers disposition of the case contingent upon the youth’s successful completion of treatment. A range of treatment resources is available to treat both the youth and family. The department provides ongoing supervision, drug testing, ancillary support, and monitoring of the youth’s progress. At regular intervals, the youth receives official recognition for achieving treatment milestones. At the successful conclusion of treatment, pending charges are dismissed by the court. The Drug Court provides opportunities for youth to improve school performance, decision-making, self-esteem, job skills, physical health, social behaviors and relationships, and community participation. A comprehensive service treatment modality is utilized to provide the services youth and their families need to be successful, such as counseling/therapy, drug treatment, drug education, and family preservation services. During 2002, a total of 205 youth participated in the program with a 83% successful completion rate. For those successfully completing the program, 98% have no further referrals resulting in adjudication or commitment to the Texas Youth Commission. Content Last Modified on 1/5/2004 2:41:05 PM |
