Tarrant County Human Services

{Human Services}

Tarrant County Human Services was first funded in October 1960 as the Tarrant County "Welfare Department" to implement services allowed by Commissioners Courts in Texas to "provide for the general relief of indigents and the burial of paupers". With services beginning in January 1961, and a name change in 1981 to Tarrant County "Human Services", the department reached the landmark 50 years of operation beginning with FY 2011 on October 1, 2010. Tarrant County Human Services seeks to provide Tarrant County residents with temporary financial assistance that moves households toward self-sufficiency and the ability to avoid future economic crisis.

The Department seeks to provide services to individuals who need financial assistance as they struggle to find work or receive on-going federal or state benefits (such as Social Security Disability payments), while receiving very little or no on-going benefits or income. While this assistance is not for everyone, services are designed to help create economic options through the crafting of a joint Case Management Plan intended to move the household toward longer-term financial stability.

Categories of assisted individuals have included those whom are disabled, unemployed and those facing temporary financial crisis, among others. As a note of caution, please remember that the Department CAN NOT assist with deposits, late fees, prepayments to prepaid electric companies, or re-connect fees.

Please read on to review the Statement of Principles and the Application for Services material if you think you or others you know may be eligible for assistance.

To begin the application process, call us at (817) 531-5620. Please call early in the day as daily appointments may fill up fast. By calling, basic initial intake is completed through a Telephone Pre-Screening Interview where a licensed social worker will assess your circumstances and open an application jacket for your household, and/or, work with you on referrals to other organizations.

Although Department services are not available to address everyone's situation of need, Tarrant County Human Services can serve as your starting point into possible services for your household and a greater potential for freedom from financial crisis in your future.
