DOT Testing Procedures

Tarrant County has a genuine interest in and concern for the safety and health of its employees. In support of this interest, the County complies with the Drug Free Workplace Act and the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act. Pre-employment drug testing is required.

Drug testing of employees who perform safety-sensitive functions and who are required to possess a Commercial Driver’s License, must be tested if they:

Perform a safety-sensitive function as defined;

  • Hold a Commercial Driver License;
  • Drive vehicles over 26,001 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR);
  • Drive vehicles placarded by DOT under hazardous material regulations;
  • Drive vehicles designed to transport more than 16 passengers, including drivers.
Tarrant County positions subject to drug testing include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Deputy Sheriff
  • Detention Corporal
  • Detention Officer
  • Equipment Maintenance Supervisor 
  • Equipment Operator II
  • Equipment Operator III
  • Equipment Operator IV
  • Facilities Maintenance Person
  • Inventory Specialist
  • Labor Detail Specialist 
  • Mechanic I (Precinct)
  • Mechanic II (Precinct)
  • Precinct Operations Supervisor
  • Project Supervisor
  • Road and Bridge Foreperson
  • Road Construction Supervisor
  • Sergeant
  • Striping Technician
  • Striping Supervisor
  • Transportation Officer
