Tuberculosis (TB)

Tuberculosis causes far more deaths than any other infectious diseases worldwide. It infects one-third of the world’s population, and kills three million people every year (a quarter of the world’s preventable deaths).

That is why it is the mission of Tarrant County Public Health, and the Tuberculosis Elimination Division to prevent, control and eliminate TB among the people of Tarrant County.

There are 16 functional elements of the Tuberculosis Elimination Division:

  1. Conducting overall planning and development of policy, prioritizing TB control activities.
  2. Identifying persons who have clinically active TB.
  3. Protecting the health of the public by isolating and treating persons who have infectious TB with directly observed therapy (DOT).
  4. Coordinating care with other health care providers.
  5. Identifying and managing high-risk persons infected with M. Tuberculosis, utilizing DOT when deemed necessary.
  6. Providing laboratory and diagnostic services.
  7. Collecting and analyzing data on TB cases, suspects, contacts, and preventive therapy recipients.
  8. Contact investigation.
  9. Physical assessment, TB assessment and follow-up, parasite screening and treatment, immunizations evaluation and follow-up of all refugees arriving in Tarrant County.
  10. Development of community partnerships through coalitions and building linkages and networks.
  11. Advising local institutions and practitioners.
  12. Ensuring prompt, mandatory reporting of each confirmed and suspected case of TB.
  13. Clinical TB drug trials.
  14. Development of new approaches for screening and prevention of TB in at-risk populations in Tarrant County such as inner-city minorities and others, including the homeless, immigrants, HIV-infected individuals, and person in correctional facilities, and development of innovative strategies for education of patients and health care providers about TB.
  15. DNA fingerprinting of M. Tuberculosis cultures.
  16. Treatment of multiple drug resistant Tuberculosis.

Citizens of Tarrant County can receive the following services:

1st Doctor visit (with medications; cases & suspects @100%) $255.00
1st Doctor visit (without medications) $52.00
Case/Susp Intake (nursing visit) $45.00
Doctor visit (and follow up for Positive Reactors) $50.00
Case/Susp Doctor visit $58.00
Susp/Case Medication Charge dependent on medication prescribed

All fees are based on a sliding fee scale. Income verification is required. Prices subject to change without notification. Prices do not include medication. Anyone in need of medical services for Tuberculosis will be seen regardless of financial ability to pay.
