These contents can be assembled over a five month period on a weekly basis and perishable items should be changed or replaced every six months.

Essentials:

  • Battery-operated radio * Flashlight *
  • Extra batteries
  • Do not include candles, which cause more fires after a disaster than anything else
  • Water: 3 gallons/person, minimum, in a food-grade, plastic container
  • Additional water for sanitation
  • Food: Minimum 3-day supply of non-perishable food that requires no refrigeration or preparation and little or no water.
    1. Dry cereal
    2. Peanut butter
    3. Canned fruits
    4. Canned vegetables
    5. Canned juice
    6. Ready-to-eat canned meats
    7. Ready-to-eat soups (not concentrated)
    8. Quick energy snacks, graham crackers
  • First Aid Kit: (one for your home and one for each car)
    1. Scissors
    2. Sun screen
    3. Thermometer
    4. Tweezers
    5. Needle
    6. Cleansing agent/soap
    7. Latex gloves (2 pairs)
    8. Tongue blades (2)
    9. Moistened towelettes
    10. Assorted sizes of safety pins
    11. 2" sterile gauze pads (4-6)
    12. 4" sterile gauze pads (4-6)
    13. 2" sterile roller bandages (3 rolls)
    14. 3" sterile roller bandages (3 rolls)
    15. Triangular bandages (3)
    16. Tube of petroleum jelly or other lubricant
    17. Sterile adhesive bandages in assorted sizes
  • Non-Prescription Drugs:
    1. Laxative
    2. Anti-diarrhea medication
    3. Aspirin or non-aspirin pain reliever
    4. Antacid (for stomach upset)
    5. Activated Charcoal (use if advised by the Poison Control Center)
    6. Syrup of Ipecac (use to induce vomiting if advised by the Poison Control Center)
  • Tools and Supplies:
    1. Whistle
    2. Aluminum foil
    3. Crowbar
    4. Compass
    5. Paper, pencil
    6. Plastic sheeting
    7. Medicine dropper
    8. Needles, thread
    9. Signal flare
    10. Matches in a waterproof container
    11. Assorted nails, wood screws
    12. Pliers, screwdriver, hammer
    13. Plastic storage containers
    14. Heavy cotton or hemp rope
    15. Cash or traveler's checks, change
    16. Map of the area (for locating shelters)
    17. Non-electric can opener, utility knife
    18. Mess kits, or paper cups, plates and plastic utensils
    19. Tape, duct and plumber's tape or strap iron
    20. Patch kit and can of seal-in-air for tires
    21. Shut-off wrench, to turn off household gas and water
  • Miscellaneous:
    1. Sanitation: Disinfectant
    2. Household chlorine bleach
    3. Soap, liquid detergent
    4. Personal hygiene items
    5. Feminine supplies
    6. Plastic bucket with tight lid
    7. Toilet paper, towelettes, paper towels
    8. Plastic garbage bags, ties (for personal sanitation uses)

    4. Sturdy shoes or work boots

    7. One complete change of clothing and footwear per person
